Why are you going to college? If you’re only interested
in a degree so you can get a job, and you are clear on your major
and areas of study, then you should be starting on those as soon
as possible. But if you hope to explore the various ideas, values,
and discoveries that people have made over the centuries, to widen
your outlook, and to discover intellectual areas you never even knew
existed, then The Big Ideas is for you.
This learning community is designed to build the foundation for
a comprehensive college education. You’ll explore basic scientific
ideas, read classic and groundbreaking research on social issues,
learn to think critically and write, and discover a new way of looking
at history. You’ll read Plato, Descartes, and other great philosophers,
learn what causes tectonic shifts, explore issues of race, gender,
and nationality. You’ll start out your college experience with
a foundation for a lifetime of learning!
This Learning Community is especially recommended for those who
are currently undecided about their majors, for those who want broad
and comprehensive college training, for education majors, and for
those who hope to do interdisciplinary work.
