Western Civilization cannot be fully comprehended without understanding two related but separate cultures: that of the old world and of the new. Both cultures have served not only as the foundation of the Americas, but also as intellectual ancestors and cultural touchstones. But how to understand both the long-ago American civilizations and the contemporary states of South and Central America? Students will learn anthropological, linguistic, and historical approaches. This learning community is dedicated to understanding the various complexities of those worlds. Classes will include courses in history, Spanish, anthropology, literature, and Latin American Studies (taught by the Associate Director of the Institute of Latin America and the Carribean), plus one class of your choice during the first semester and one or two during the second semester. A number of students in this learning community will be invited to an archeological site in Guatemala for a summer course in 2007.
