What
are the Learning Communities?
Learning communities are all about making connections. Most simply, a learning community is a group of students who take a set of courses. The LC experience is the closest you can get to a liberal arts college experience at a large university. You will end up knowing your classmates well, since you will see them in more than one class. Your classes will be smaller than most first-year college classes, and you will get to know your teachers better. Since the whole cohort of students will be reading the same materials, you will be able to use and discuss what you are learning in one class in others. If you have read Weber’s The Protestant Ethic in one class, the students in your other classes will have read it, too, and will be able to discuss how the current readings relate. You and your classes will be able to make connections between your courses, your readings, and each other. Each learning communities is designed to expose you to a wide variety of readings that will be useful for your college experience and also to meet a number of the requirements that all students need to graduate. You will be signed up for four or five classes (11-14 credits) the first semester, and two or three the second semester of your first year. During the second semester, you will also register for two or three other courses. Depending on the learning community, you may also sign up for an additional course the first semester. |
