Alcohol and substance use and their accompanying problems are enormous across the United States. They cross all socio-economic strata. They hold no racial prejudices. They are an issue for both young and old, male and female. Arguably, these problems directly and indirectly affect as much as half the population of the US through human and economic costs of treatment (and non-treatment), impaired driving, alcohol and substance related injuries, diseases, deaths, family disruption, violence and sexual assaults, etc. To address these issues, the Alcohol and Substance Use Research Institute (ASURI) was established at the University of South Florida in 1993 to support research and training activities pertaining to the etiology and treatment of problematic alcohol and substance use.
ASURI is organizationally located within the Department of Psychology at the University of South Florida (USF). It is a multifaceted institute conducting ongoing research which is currently funded by:
Members of ASURI are primarily members of the Clinical Psychology Program at USF. This program has particular strength in the area of addictive behaviors and substance abuse. Complementing the Clinical Faculty are those members of the research team who serve as faculty in the Cognitive and Neural Sciences Program, which is also part of the Department of Psychology at USF. Other USF colleges, departments, and institutes contributing research and staff to ASURI include: |
