Drug Discovery Symposium

The USF Dept. of Chemistry is pleased to announce our upcoming Symposium on Molecular Diversity in Drug Design, Discovery and Delivery, which is scheduled for October 24-26, 2007 on the USF campus. This is the first of three annual symposia being sponsored by the Florida Center of Excellence in Biomolecular Identification and Targeted Therapeutics (FCoE-BITT). This event is open to anyone that would like to come, hear extraordinary lectures from top scientists in the world, and also present glimpses of thier own research in the poster session. This is a very notable event for the department, and the university, and we do hope you will plan to participate.

As you can see from the tentative schedule below, we have put together a very high-profile agenda for this first symposium. Registration fees are only $35 for students and postdocs, and includes two luncheons and a dinner prior to the Plenary Lecture by Nobel Laureate, Professor Barry Sharpless from Scripps Research Institute. Attached is a registration form and a call for abstracts for our poster session. Anyone presenting a poster will receive a $20 rebate on their registration fee (limit of one rebate per person, and one rebate per poster). The Raymond Castle Student Research Conference was initiated as a means to encourage undergraduate and graduate students to present their scientific data in a friendly atmosphere. We are pleased to announce that the Fifth Annual Raymond N. Castle Student Research Conference will be held on Saturday, April 29th, 2006. Nobel Laureate Dr. John C. Polanyi to Speak at Seminar

We are pleased to announce Dr. John C. Polanyi, 1986 Nobel Prize Winner in Chemistry, will be speaking as part of our Spring 2005 Seminar Series. This event is sponsored by TIAA-CREF.

Florida Inorganic Mini-Symposium (FIMS)

The Division of Inorganic Chemistry in the Chemistry Department of the University of South Florida is proud to host the 2004 Florida Inorganic Mini Symposium (FIMS). The symposium will be held on October 30th 2004 (Saturday), at the Univeristy of South Florida Tampa Campus.

We would like to issue the call for abstracts of both oral (ACS format) and poster presentations. Remember this is an event where students are to present and get a chance to be in the spotlight.

Graduate Tracking System

Starting this semester, the Department of Chemistry is using an online system to track graduate students' progress through the Graduate Checklist. All the checklist forms are online, and graduate students and their committee can sign them electronically.

At the moment, only students starting this semester are entered into the system. The remaining graduate students will be entered within the next couple weeks.

Department of Chemistry Open House

The Department of Chemistry Open House will be March 25-27, 2004 for students interested in our graduate program. Students will travel to the open house on March 25. Friday, March 26 will consist of activities on campus and on Saturday March 27 there will be an outing to a Tampa Bay attraction. Interested students should contact Randy Larsen, e-mail rlarsen@chuma1.cas.usf.edu . We will need a transcript and one letter of recommendation. The Department of Chemistry will then arrange the travel and hotel accommodations.

Integrated Interdisciplinary Nanoscience REU

We are pleased to announce our 2003 Integrated Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program supported by the National Science Foundation. The ten-week REU program will begin June 1, 2003. Undergraduate students will be exposed to state-of-the-art materials science/nanotechnolgyis research in an interdisciplinary environment. The program will be housed in the Department of Chemistry and consists of faculty mentors from the Departments of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Physics. Students will receive housing, meals, travel costs and a $3,100 stipend. Juniors with a strong science background are encouraged to apply. For more information, please see:

The daughter and son-in-law of Judge and Mrs. E. J. Salcines will be named Outstanding Chemistry Alumni this coming Tuesday, April 2, at the Annual Undergraduate Awards Banquet sponsored by the University of South Florida Department of Chemistry. The banquet is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Embassy Suites Hotel on Fowler Avenue. The banquet is an annual event during which outstanding undergraduate students in various areas of chemistry are recognized and receive awards.

The Chemistry Department is pleased to welcome two new faculty members: Dr. Bill Baker, and Dr. Jennifer Lewis. Dr. Baker is an Associate Professor with research interests in natural products from marine microorganisms. Dr. Lewis is an Assistant Professor specializing in chemical education.

Undergraduate Research Competition

Clear Springs Land Company has generously provided funds to sponsor the 2002 Castle Research Conference. In addition to awards for the outstanding oral and poster presentations at the undergraduate and graduate level, this year's conference will feature an undergraduate research competition that is broadly focused upon clays and their possible applications. There will be a total of $19,500 in awards, with first place prize of $10,000.

New Stipends!

Effective for the 2001-02 academic year, we will offer 25 9-month stipends of $14K for new GA's. Summer teaching or research assignments can bring 12-month stipends up to $18,600.

$20K Foundation Fellowship Awards: USF will offer 13 of these fellowships for 2001-02. Outstanding students who apply for graduate school will be nominated.
