How do I make an advising apointment?
Do I need two semesters of a foreign language even though I took it in high school?
YES. We accept any foreign language, as well as American Sign Language.
Why am I listed as PSP (“pre-communication”)?
PSP is a designation given to students who have not met one of three pre-requisites for admission to the Communication major. To be admitted to the major you must have 1) 30 credit hours, 2) a 2.5 overall GPA, and 3) successfully completed SPC 2600 (Introduction to Public speaking). Most students are designated “pre-communication” because they do not have the required 2.5 overall GPA to be admitted to the major.
What are my chances of admission to the major?
Depending on both your GPA and the total number of cumulative hours you have completed (and other factors), this requirement may be relatively easy to achieve or all but impossible. For example, a student with only 30 hours and 2.4 may be able to get to 2.5 quite easily. A student with 110 hours and a 2.4 may find getting to a 2.5 very difficult. The best way to learn about your particular situation is to make an appointment with the communication advisor.
Can I graduate if I am still listed as pre-communication?
No. You must have been admitted to the major in order to graduate with the major (and you must have a major in order to graduate).
What should I do if I am concerned about my status as "pre-communication"?
See your advisor. Some students are better off pursuing another major at USF that requires only a 2.0 to be admitted.
I’ve fulfilled all three pre-requisites, but I’m still listed as PSP. Now what?
You will need to go to www.cas.usf.edu/declare/ and resubmit the declaration of Communication as your major. If you have fulfilled all three prerequisites to declare Communication your major, then you will be admitted to the major and your status will change to COMM.
Do I have to do an Internship?
No, but we offer SPC 4942 Communication Internship Seminar, usually in the spring. The internship director makes a call for applications towards the end of the fall semester for students interested in doing community oriented internships. Other options for internships are offered through the University and the College of Arts and Sciences, and can be used towards electivies outside the major.
Can I take COM 3110?
NO. This course is for non-majors only.
Will my communication courses from other institutions count towards my degree?
Possibly. You need to provide the advisor with a course description from the institution. If you plan on taking a course at another institution either as cross-enrollment (taken while also enrolled at USF) or as a transient student, you should check with your advisor (only transient student status forms must be signed by advisor). Forms are availalbe in and submitted to BEH 201.
Where do I find our about ARC petitions regarding late adds/drops, late fee waivers, withdrawing from a semester, deleting a course my record, and academic dismisal?
All petitions must be submitted to BEH 201, College of Arts and Sciences.
