Business Meeting Minutes 2002

November 23, 2002
New Orleans

Meeting was called to order at 12:41pm by the chair of the Performance Studies Division, Ruth Bowman. Bowman noted we had 28 programs this year, and we started with a pre-conference program, jointly sponsored on prisons. She asked that all members of the Performance Studies Division join us for a reception honoring Paul Gray and Beverly Whitaker Long. She thanked those who organized the receptions.

Deryl Johnson gave his "Archive" report, noting that last year he "offered fifty dollars to any member who submitted to the archives," and he discovered that he "wasn't out one dime." Johnson strongly encouraged submissions next year. He noted that he is applying for various grants to support the archives. He is now intent on collecting relevant material, anticipating our 50th anniversary as a division. This year, he'll begin by taking photographs, which he did during the Performance Studies Division meeting.

Johnny Gray passed out the recent "Publication List." He also noted that the division is updating the mailing list. He requested that members please correct errors and send them to him.

Bruce Henderson encouraged members to fill out the form which was distributed. He echoed that it was a version of an earlier call from the research committee. He noted that the Research Committee was not trying to create "a canon." Rather, they are attempting to collect information regarding what works the membership turns to as they do their scholarship, their teaching, and their performance work. In essence, the Research Committee is just trying to collect a bibliography of what our membership is currently reading. He asked members to email or snail mail him.

Since there was no representative from the short course committee, no report was given.

Kirk Fuoss was not in attendance, but his report on the status of TPQ was read aloud to the membership. 71 manuscripts were submitted to TPQ: 51 were new manuscripts, 16 were resubmitted after revision. Relevant percentages: 20% were accepted for publication, 31% were rejected, 45% received "revise and resubmit," 4% were withdrawn. Patrick Johnson will edit issue #24 of TPQ, devoted to manuscripts on race and performance. March 15th deadline for submission for that particular issue. Submission notices on back table. Michael Bowman will be the next editor of TPQ. He will edit the journal from January 2003 through December 2006.

Michael Bowman noted that all NCA journals will now be printed and distributed by Routledge. This should improve the cross-indexing of our journal, also Routledge seems intent on better marketing, including selling back issues to libraries. Michael encouraged membership to submit articles to him. Ruth Bowman also noted that Routledge publishing will guarantee revenue to NCA and that NCA retains copyright. And NCA members will get print and on line access.

Donna Marie Nudd announced the theme of next year's NCA convention: Reaching Out, Reaching In. She also announced that the submission process will be ON LINE next year. All those who are entering a competitive paper or a panel, must do so on line. She noted that a paper submission for competitive/debut panel will be sent as hard copy to her, but member still needs to be register the submission on line. Nudd also asked division members to follow the form/guidelines exactly. Nudd also described the Executive Committee's intention to reserve one panel slot next year in Miami, tentatively called "Passages." This panel would be reserved to honor someone who has recently passed, about to retire, or perhaps to bring back a member who is no longer in academe. Executive Committee will approve the panel. "Passages" is something the Division will try for a year or two.

Awards Committee: Tim Gura was appointed to chair; new members include Cindy Kistenberg, Karen Mitchell, Dan Heaton and Kristin Valentine.

Research Committee: Mindy Fenske and Jodi Kanter will continue to serve. Two new members are Sharon Croft and Gary Belfantz.

Short Course Committee: Bryant Alexander and Clair Van Ens will continue to serve. Marcy Chvasta is the new member.

Daryl Johnson will continue on as chair of the Archives Committee.

Bruce Henderson thanked the members of the Nominating Committee. He announced the results of this year's election: Eastern-Claire Van Ens, Southern-Marcy Chvasta, Central-Jonathan Gray, Western-Olga Davis, Member at Large-Amy Burt, Secretary-Tracy Stephenson, Vice-Chair Elect-Craig Gingrich-Philbrook.

"Rap Rhythm as Performative Perforation: Unmasking the Denial of Death in Post Industrial Popular Culture," James W. Perkinson, Marygrove College, won this year's Top Competititve Paper in Performance Studies.

Ron Pelias thanked the members of the awards committee.

Lee Jenkins presented the Service Award to Kristin Valentine.

Nathan Stucky noted that this year's recipients of the Irene Coger Award would be honored at the NCA awards ceremony at 6pm this evening. Stucky thanked the awards committee. The Irene Coger Award would go this year to Joni Lee Jones to pay tribute to her distinguished record as a writer, performer and director in performance. Also, this year's award committee is offering a second Irene Coger Award to honor the legacy of distinguished work in Performance to a colleague whose presence we dearly miss--Patti Pace.

Joni Lee Jones announced that the Lilla Heston Award for Outstanding Scholarship would be given at the NCA award ceremony to Lisa Merrill.

Mary Frances HopKins reminded the membership that the Lilla Heston award was endowed by Margaret Davidson.

Ruth Bowman announced that perforum be moved into an electronic format. There will be a collaborative effort by executive board this year to make sure it'll happen.

Bowman also announced that there will be a hard copy directory of NCA members again.

Bowman noted that the amendments to the NCA constitution did not pass because only 30% of the membership voted. The amendment did not pass, because bylaws dictate that a 67% response is needed. Bowman urged the membershipto vote.

Announcements about various festivals, job searches, etc. were made from the floor.

Donna Marie Nudd announced the "Bad Performance Party" Saturday evening in honor of Daun Kendig. Jane Donovan introduced Diane Kendig. Diane thanked the membership for their support of her sister. Diane read aloud Theodore Roethke's "The Waking" and the membership toasted, with champagne in hand, our colleague and friend, Duan Kendig.

Meeting was adjourned.

Business Meeting Minutes 1996

November 24, 1996
San Diego

The meeting was called to order by Jacqueline Taylor (PSD Chairperson) at 5:03pm. The minutes for the 1995 SCA-PSD Business Meeting were approved. Jackie Taylor called for reports by PSD committees and officers.

Ronald E. Shields (Publications) announced new books by PSD members: Cindy Kistenberg’s AIDS, Social Change, and Theatre: Performance as Protest, named by Choice Magazine an outstanding academic book for 1996. Paul Gray’s and James VanOosting’s Performance in Life and Literature, and Judy Yordon’s Experimental Theatre. Sheron Daily reported that the Future of Performance Studies will be published by SCA during the next year. Nathan Stucky reported that the Performance Index is in progress and moving from a paper publication to an on-line searchable resource. He thanked Cindy Kistenberg, Ted Spencer, David Weber, Karen Mitchell, and Jack Price for their work on the project.

Cindy Kistenberg (Research) reported on the new listserv, SCA-Perform, and urged members to join.

Paul Gray (Editor, TPQ) reported on the upcoming special issue of TPQ on “Performing Autobiography” focusing on theory, practice, and individual performers to be edited by Lynn Miller and Jackie Taylor. Paul Gray thanked his assistants, Heather Carver and Ed Smith, for their work during his editorship. Paul Gray announced the new editor of TPQ, Judith Hamera.

Craig S. Gingrich-Philbrook (Short Course) urged members to submit short course proposals for the 1997 convention in Chicago by February 1, 1997.

Deryl B. Johnson (Archivist) reported on the state of the archives and urged members to make submissions. He also reported on the new homepage for PSD.

Nathan Stucky reported on the 1996 convention and thanked the membership for the merit of their proposals and programs. He reported that the number of PSD programs increased to twenty-five, which was more than the available time-slots causing some PSD programs to be double booked. He thanked Sharon Taylor for her assistance coordinating the PSD program on performance art at Sushi Gallery, Inc. He recognized S. Marie Westhaver for her paper “Where Boundaries Blur: Women’s Differentiated Bodies Under Siege” and Kristin Langellier for “You’re Marked: Breast Cancer, Tattoo, and the Narrative Performance of the Identity,” the 1996 top debut and competitive papers in performance studies, respectively. Jackie Taylor thanked Nathan Stucky for his work coordinating the 1996 PSD programs.

John S. Gentile (Secretary) reported that the upcoming issues of perforum, the PSD newsletter, will be under the editorship of the new secretary. He encouraged members to send news items on "Publications Outside of TPQ” and “Honors, Grants, Appointments and Special Performances” to the new secretary/editor. He reported that a future issue will include a listing of recent dissertations and theses in performance studies. He also urged the membership to return their 1997 ballots in next autumn issue of Perforum. Jackie Taylor thanked John Gentile for his work as secretary and editor.

Jackie Taylor announced the appointments made by the PSD Executive Board: Research Committee: Elizabeth Bell (1998) appointed chair, Lisa Wolford (1999), Eric Peterson (1999); Awards Committee: Frederick C. Corey (1997) appointed chair, Paul Gray (1998), Mary S. Strine (1998), Donna Nudd (1998); Short Course Committee: Craig S. Gingrich-Philbrook (1997) appointed Chair for a second term, Randy Hill (1999); Archives Committee: Cal Fuller (1999).

C. Sue Davis (Nominating) announced the results from the 1996 election: Nominating Committee. At-Large-John M. Allison, Eastern-Shannon Jackson, Southern-Elizabeth Bell, Central-Maggie Doyle, Western-Frederick C. Corey. Secretary: Karen S. Mitchell. Vice-Chair Elect: A tie between nominees Ronald E. Shields and James VanOosting.

Discussion followed announcement of the tie vote. Jackie Taylor announced that she would break the tie vote according to the PSD Constitution & By-Laws with a coin toss. Beverly Whitaker Long suggested that since both candidates were highly qualified for the position and each had garnered substantial support from membership that both candidates should serve as Chair with a coin toss deciding the order of serving. The membership approved Beverly Whitaker Long’s suggestion unanimously. The coin toss followed with the results that: James VanOosting was named First Vice-Chair Elect (to coordinate the convention in New York City in 1998) and Ronald Shields was named Second Vice-Chair Elect (to coordinate the convention in Chicago in 1999). The titles First and Second Vice-Chair Elect were adopted by the PSD Executive Board at John Gentile’s suggestion based on SCA practice to indicate order of serving. Because of the tie vote and the naming of two successive Vice-Chair Elects, the 1997 PSD Ballot will not include a Vice-Chair Elect position.

Kay Ellen Capo (Awards) presented the PSD Distinguished Service Award to Kristin Langellier.

Michael Bowman (Vice-Chair Elect) reported on the 1997 SCA convention in Chicago and its theme “Celebrating Our Centrality,” intended to foreground “what our discipline knows.” He encouraged members to submit programs in response to that theme and indicated that SCA will continue the “At the Helm” series with individual speakers. Michael Bowman also reported on the intention of John A. Daly (SCA Second Vice President) to expand the Poster Session format. Michael Bowman clarified the ramifications of an increased use of Poster Sessions for PSD. He reported that SCA is discouraging co-sponsored programs and explained that members with proposals that bridge SCA units should consider the Dimension series. He also reported that SCA is also discouraging requests for special equipment at the Chicago convention.

Jackie Taylor announced the winners of the 1996 SCA awards: Leslie Irene Coger Award-Annette Martin, Lilla A. Heston Award-Mary Frances HopKins, Distinguished Service Award: Beverly Whitaker Long.

Jackie Taylor announced plans for a one-day pre-convention conference in New York City in 1998.

upon receiving the

Distinguished Service Award of

The Performance Studies Division of

The Speech Communication Association

You have been very kind to warm this old lady’s winter with words that replenish her ego and nourish her spirit. “We are not now that strength which in old days/Moved” through the sessions of SCA or the cocktail parties awards, but Wallace and Tim keep me current with what is happening. About some things, it’s true, I think “I could roll in the dust of a fine rage.” Now, when that happens, I shall look fondly at your kind remembrance, and recall that “Great Nature has another thing to do/To you and me.” For even here, even now in Taos when my aspens dear have lost their golden leaves, and “a few white clouds all rushing eastward,” you are much in my thoughts, and though I have had to let go of you with the hands, I “have no wish to do with the heart—nor need,/That I can see.” All of you who have been so kind to remember me clearly understand why “nothing tells me/That I need to learn to let go with the heart.” Thank you.

1991 ID Distinguished Service Award

As chair of the 1991 Interpretation Division Distinguished Service Award Committee, I am honored to present the award this year to a close friend and colleague. That fact makes it doubly hard not to be there in person—but if anyone understands that fieldwork on three grant projects keeps me away, this colleague will understand and forgive me. I think you will know quickly that the recipient is the person I delight in calling the “Indiana Jones of Performance Studies.”

Let me quote to you from some of the letters of nomination for our awardee. One says, “It is in the area of performance—personal performance—that this scholar distinguishes himself from other top researchers (he certainly is one) in our field. His riveting evocation of Hmong refugee flight story and of the teenage gang defendant are two cases inpoint. His service to the communication field by accepting serious responsibilities overseas in Southeast Asia and Israel, as well as addresses at Temple University and NYU, have brought our concerns and influence far beyond customary regional and national gatherings of our people. His service to the Division of Interpretation has new respect and relevance that has raised our ethos among other divisions of SCA. He has put our scholarship on the cutting edge of current thinking.” In another nomination letter, someone wrote, “I can honestly say that every talk I have ever heard him give—from the early days of his interest in Old English narrative until the present—has inspired and stayed with me.”

We all have been inspired and indelibly marked by Dwight Conquergood and that is why he is the 1991 recipient of the ID Distinguished Service Award.

Jean Haskell Speer
