The Department of Performance Studies engages performance as both an object of study-something to be documented, analyzed, theorized-and as a living art form -something to be experienced, practiced, enacted. The unique and defining characteristic of the department is its commitment to both theory and practice, the analytical and the artistic.

The faculty include Paul Berliner, Jennifer Devere Brody, Tracy Davis, Micaela di Leonardo, Margaret Thompson Drewal, Paul Edwards, Frank Galati, E. Patrick Johnson, Susan Manning, Sandra L. Richards, Leland Roloff, Jeffrey Sconce, Carol Simpson Stern, Mary J Weismantel, Harvey Young, and Mary Zimmerman.

Graduate course in performance include Studies in Performance, Performance of Individual Literary Styles, History of Performance Traditions, Cultural Studies and Performance, Adaptation and Staging of Texts, Critical and Aesthetic Principles, Media and Performance, Modes of Representation, Postmodern Performance, and Problems in Performance Studies.
