We are searching for three positions:
(a) An assistant or associate professor who can work in one of the areas of our department and with the Department of Africana Studies,
(b) an instructional post doc in organizational communication, and
(c) a post doctoral scholar in sustainable societies.


Faculty Position—Communication and Africana Studies

Assistant or Associate Professor


The Departments of Communication and Africana Studies at the University of South Florida invite applications for a 9-month tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor position to begin August 2010. The tenure home for the position is in Communication. Salary is negotiable.

We seek a dynamic scholar-teacher who will contribute to one or more of the areas of teaching and research strength in Communication and in Africana Studies. The Department of Communication focuses on qualitative and interpretive approaches to interpersonal, organizational, and health communication; rhetorical studies; cultural and media studies; and performance studies. The Department of Africana Studies focuses on the health of peoples of African descent and other marginalized groups, genocide and human rights, race and race relations, and cultures and communities in Africa and the Diaspora. Applicants must show potential for making significant contributions to both departments and their disciplines.

The departments and the university value local and global community engagement and support research and teaching addressing contemporary social issues. Applicants must provide evidence of successful teaching and research appropriate for appointment in a doctoral degree-granting department at a Research I university. Potential for obtaining external research funding is desirable.

Ph.D. in Communication is desired. Although we will consider applicants with terminal degrees in allied disciplines, such candidates must make their intellectual homes in the Communication discipline. A completed PhD is strongly preferred, but ABD applicants who are close to completion and with strong records will be considered (in the event the Ph.D. is not completed by August 2010, initial appointment will be made at the rank of Instructor).

Organizational Communication at the University of South Florida
Instructional Post Doc


The Department of Communication at the University of South Florida invites applications for a 9-month Instructional Post Doc position in Organizational Communication to begin August 2010, and renewable for a second year. We seek a dynamic and accomplished teacher-scholar with experience in teaching and research in Organizational Communication. The successful candidate will see his or her academic study as compatible with our department’s expertise and leadership in qualitative research, and will be excited by the opportunity to teach organizational communication and related courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The department and the university value community engagement and support research and teaching addressing contemporary social issues.

Applicants should have a doctoral degree earned no earlier than 2007 in Communication or a cognate discipline with a substantive emphasis in Organizational Communication. Applicants must demonstrate evidence of accomplishment in teaching and research appropriate for appointment at a major research university. Applicants must have defended the dissertation by May 3, 2010. Salary is $45,000 plus benefits.

Post Doctoral Scholar Program
University of South Florida


The Department of Communication at the University of South Florida is pleased to announce the second year of USF’s Postdoctoral Scholars program in the social sciences and humanities. The over-arching theme for this year’s program is Sustainable Societies: Building Social, Cultural, and Environmental Capital in a Globalized World.

Postdoctoral fellows are expected to contribute to one or more of USF’s priority goals in its strategic plan, which include (1) Expanding world-class interdisciplinary research, creative and scholarly endeavors; (2) promoting globally competitive programs in teaching and research; (3) expanding local and global engagement initiatives to strengthen sustainable and healthy communities; and (4) enhancing revenue through external support. In addition, the post doctoral scholars will participate in an interdisciplinary and programmatic seminar series; teach one course each semester; continue building an outstanding, independent research record; and if appropriate, seek external funding.

We seek an outstanding young researcher who will be able to take advantage of spending up to two years as a member of our department with an opportunity to work with our faculty and students.
