Bilingual Research Discussion Group
Purpose
The Bilingual Research Discussion Group aims to integrate undergraduate students interested in communication sciences and disorders, and other related disciplines. The group promote the study of clinical and research issues dealing with bilingualism, code-switching, and language development.
Participants in the group will have the opportunity to investigate and learn about different assessment techniques used throughout the world, particularly related to the Spanish speaking population.
The issues discussed in the group include topics about bilingual people of all ages, ranging from pre-school to adult.
Objectives
The objectives of this group are to:
Learn and understand normal development of speech and language for bilingual speakers.
Develop knowledge of the various disorders affecting speech and language of bilingual speakers, and the underlying pathologies of the disorders.
Study the equipment and procedures available to assess speech and language disorders of bilingual speakers.
Discuss the therapeutical procedures used to correct or improve speech and language disorders of bilingual speakers.
Community service to the low socio-economic groups of the Hispanic community by providing parents of special needs children with resources readily available for helping their children.
