Technology Enhanced Language Learning at the English Language Institute

Chat, Video, and Audio in the ESL Classrooms

Over the course of the semester, teachers at the ELI have been exploring and integrating various computer and Internet applications ranging from website development with specific ESL activities to the use of audio and video. All the CALL activities are geared towards enhancing ELI’s students language learning experience through innovate applications and tools. This issue of the TELL@ELI presents a short overview on how teachers integrated  chat, video, and audio in their classrooms, and how these can be used to strengthen and explore the functions of language.

Debbie Mitchell explores Dr. Seuss for pronunciation practice by integrating online audio and text files with follow-up activities using sound recorder or asynchronous conferencing tools (e.g. Nicenet). Iona Sarieva suggests a possible scenario for why students diverge from chatting tasks in L2  and reviews the types of activities that can be used with chat tools to enhance students language learning and interest in language learning through chat. Lastly, Elizabeth de Sousa presents how she integrated the use of QuickTime movie trailers in her ESL classroom and offers possible follow-up activities. I would like to thank Debbie, Elizabeth, and Iona for taking the time to share their activities with the rest of us!

Many free resources and applications are available on the ELI Teacher’s Page (online and on Nicenet). A few new links have been added on WebQuests; Links for Teachers; Rubrics, Tools, and Surveys; and Pragmatics. If you find a particular free resource or application or have designed a lesson plan from a particular website, please let me know so that we will include it in the Fall issue.

Last, but not least… I would sincerely like to congratulate Iona Sarieva for being hired as your new Call Consultant at the ELI. Iona has developed many workshops in the past on integrating CALL into the classroom, has already worked as an instructor at the ELI, and most importantly is a wonderful colleague. I know that you will be in great hands with her!

Recently, a friend said to me: “You win the lottery by the people you meet”. That is absolutely true for all the faculty and staff at the ELI. Thanks to all for a most wonderful experience!
