CALL Article Review

If you are interested in research related to CALL and more specifically how computer-mediated communication benefits the language learning process, the name Mark Warschauer is already familiar to you. Darunee introduces an annotation to Warschauer’s article “Comparing Face-to-Face and Electronic Discussion in the Second Language Classroom.” In this article, Warschauer presents a study that reveals the benefits of implementing electronic discussions in the ESL classroom. Sound Recorder and Targeting Pronunciation

Targeting Pronunciation is a great text for supporting the speaking skills of language learners. However, implementing the activities and meeting the objectives in the regular classroom in an engaging and effective way might be challenging. Scott describes how he extended the Targeting Pronunciation practice to the computer lab using the Sound Recorder.

Introducing American Holidays with Authentic Video: A Lesson Plan

Sunhwa planned this lesson to introduce American holidays to the students in Level II Culture class. The students were assigned to watch video clips in which native speakers talk about how they celebrate a specific holiday. After watching the video, the students answered questions provided by the teacher. The video clips were authentic materials taped by the teacher and became an alternative way for the students to meet native speakers from the community.

Conferencing via Yahoo! Messenger in the Culture 2 Class

Jenny presents the computer-mediated conferencing activity she created and used in her Culture 2 class. She shares ideas for modifying this conferencing activity for students with lower language and/or computer skills.

India in the CALL Classroom: A CALL Listening/Speaking Activity (Level 4)

Lisana Mohamed successfully implemented National Public Radio broadcasts in a listening and information exchange activity she created for her Academic Interaction, Level 4 class. The dramatic real-life stories the students had to listen to and talk about contributed to greater student involvement and motivation. Lisana provides a brief yet emotional rationale for the activity and describes the activity step by step providing the URLs on which the broadcasts can be accessed.

CALL Materials and Activities in Grammar 1 Class

No Computer Lab for the Grammar Class? It’s not a problem - you can still use CALL activities! Ayline shares her experiences with using Nicenet in her Grammar 1 along with her favorite Internet resources she used this semester.
