Course Enrollment Procedures

Due to the limited size of our GIS teaching lab, enrollment in most of our GIS classes is limited to 20 students. To ensure students can complete their program witin a reasonable time-frame and to promote fairness in access to courses, we have established the following enrollment procedures.

  1. GIS certificate students and graduate students in Geography have equal priority in terms of getting into the GIS courses; graduate students in other departments are welcome to enroll in any of the courses (if they meet the prerequisites of the course) if spaces are available.
  2. Most courses at present require a permit before you can register; these are issued by the instructor of each course, so you will need to contact the instructor ahead of time to get into a particular course.
  3. Students accepted into the program will automatically have a reserved spot in the Advanced GIS class for the term they were accepted into the program; if you decide not to take the Advanced GIS class that term, you are required to inform the instructor as early as possible to guarantee that you will have a spot the next time the course is offered.
  4. If  interest in a course exceeds the enrollment limit, the following considerations apply:
  • Certificate students and graduate students in Geography who were waitlisted for that particular course the last time it was offered, will be given priority;
  • Certificate students and graduate students in Geography who need the course for a timely completion of their program/degree will be given priority; in other words, students who were accepted into the program/degree earlier will be given priority. Students may loose this priority if they have not taken any courses for a year or more.
  1. Students who have completed their certificate are welcome to take additional courses, but only if spaces are availabe; certificate students and graduate students will be given priority.
