B.A. GEOGRAPHY The undergraduate program in the Department of Geography offers a variety of courses in aspects of both physical and human geography. The program consists of 11 courses (41 hours total), seven of which are core courses required of all majors. Students choose any four supporting geography courses for their remaining credits. The major offers applied and techniques orientations for students, which is stressed through coursework, advising, and through the core course structure for the major. Human geography courses focus on the social and spatial effects of the growth of cities, including issues such as the historical evolution of urban form and function, land-use changes and conflicts, economic restructuring, the growth and decline of inner-cities, and urban racial and ethnic relations. Physical geography courses focus on major environmental systems including the hydrosphere, atmosphere, pedosphere, and biosphere. Particular emphasis is placed on the human modification of the natural environment and the global interconnections of the major earth systems.
Admission Requirements Admission to the program follows University guidelines. Junior college transfer students generally begin fulfilling the Geography program requirements in their junior year, but students may begin the program as freshmen or sophomores.
