Meet with Health Professions Advising

The Division of Health Professions Advising Office offers Group Advising sessions. These sessions are run by Dr. Melvin James and Mr. Anthony Iannelli.

Group advising sessions accommodate roughly 15 students and are on a first-come, first-served basis. Sessions are divided by professional interests and student classification. See below for more information on how to choose the group advising session that is right for you.

For students in the below majors, you have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with your Certified Health Professions Advisor

  • Biology Majors = Mary Cuthbertson
  • Psychology Majors = Lauren Keroack

**Biomedical Sciences (BMS) is not a Biology degree program.

It is required to attend at least 1 group advising session before scheduling an in-office appointment with your Certified Advisor.

Health Professions Group Advising Calendar

Please review the calendars below for more information about the date, time, location, and type of group advising sessions taking place this summer.

RSVPs will not be taken for these sessions as they will be first come, first served. Once room capacity is reached, no additional students will be allowed to join the session. Students who arrive more than 10 minutes late to the session will not be allowed to join. Additionally, those in the session must remain for the entire time.

 

 

 

 

Appointment Types :

Group Advising: During a group advising session, you will assess your Pre-Health profile for competitiveness by reviewing GPA, rigor of semester scheduling, extracurricular activities, healthcare experiences, preparation for entrance examination, and more. Additionally, the Health Professions Advisors are available to answer questions about recommendations to build competitiveness, major options, suggestions for extracurricular activities and any other questions you may have.

Academic Advising (AA) Hold Group Workshops: These workshops are for PMS students ONLY. All incoming first year students will have an academic advising (AA) hold placed on their account during their first two semesters at USF. Until you declare a major officially, you will attend one of these workshops to have your AA hold lifted. If you are declared in a major, please schedule an appointment with your Major Advisor to remove your AA hold.

Certified Advising One-on-One Appointments: If you are declared in one of the majors with a Certified Advisor and have attend at least one group advising session, you have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with your Certified Health Professions Advisor to discuss a variety of topics. These appointments range from Competiveness Reviews, Preparation for the Health Professions program of your choice, Application Reviews and Career Exploration.

Personal Statement Review:The Division of Health Professions Advising has partnered with the USF Writing Center to offer Personal Statement Reviews. Once you have reviewed the information on our Essay Writing Page and writing at least a first draft of your Personal Statement, you can contact the USF Writing Center and schedule an appointment with one of the Health Professions Essay Consultants, who have been trained specifically on Personal Statements for Health Professions applications. These consultants are Noah, Wendy, or Jennifer.

Mock Interview: If you would like to practice your interview skills, you can schedule a Mock Interview with the Career Center in order to gain experience in a realistic interview setting. To schedule this type of appointment, please contact the Career Center. Prior to that appointment please review the resources located on our Interviewing Page.
