The department of Humanities and American Studies offers two interdisciplinary degrees. The Humanities degree includes European and Latin American Cultures, as well as North American. The American Studies degree focuses exclusively on the culture of the United States.
Both degrees integrate the fine arts, popular and folk arts, material culture, philosophy and social history in pursuit of a modified version of the traditional "liberal arts" education, emphasizing how cultural values develop and are communicated. All faculty have interdisciplinary backgrounds, and they hold doctoral degrees in such fields as American Studies, Art History, Comparative Arts, Literature, History and Musicology.
