Major Requirements
First-year students are introduced to the wide range of
thought underlying the social sciences, reading such foundational
writers as Plato, Weber, Marx, Thoreau, Todorov, Foucault,
DuBois, Descartes, Beauvoir, Freud, Nietzsche, Fanon, Rousseau,
Emerson, Wollstonecraft, Skinner, and Mauss. Majors must
develop abilities in quantitative measurement and qualitative
critical thought. Senior majors are required to engage
in original research under the guidance of a social science
professor.
Each major must choose two cognate areas{link to Cognate
Areas) in which to specialize, and compose a narrative
which explains the particular relationship between those
areas. Each cognate area has its own requirements.
