WLE Pedagogic Philosophy
Languages are one of the key foundations of
humanistic studies and inquiry; they are in fact at the base of all
learning. World Languages is the most diverse department in
the university with respect to the number of different degree programs
offered as it includes Classics, Modern languages, and Linguistics. Nevertheless,
all of these different programs are united by their teaching of and investigation
of languages in their cultural, linguistic, literary, and social contexts.
Students with preparation in our degree programs will have a sound
humanistic basis on which to engage in all kinds of professions upon
graduation.
Faculty who teach in the department typically have degrees in fields
such as Classics; Foreign Languages, Literature, and Culture; Linguistics;
Comparative Literature and/or Film Studies. The increasingly interdisciplinary
nature of contemporary higher education means that this list should not
be construed as exclusive.
A primary goal of the teaching of languages in the department is to enable
students to communicate effectively on as many levels of discourse as possible
and at the same time to understand the cultures with which these languages
are inextricably bound. In addition to imparting to its students the means
with which to communicate with the rest of the world the department strives
to have its students understand that world from a humanistically informed
stance. |
