ESOL Endorsement

ESOL Endorsement courses have been taught for decades by the Linguistics faculty in the College of Arts & Sciences.

We continue to offer, on a regular basis, all five courses recognized by the State of Florida. Our classes are held at night for students' convenience.

The State of Florida Performance Standards are incorporated into our instructional framework. (The State Department of Education provides information on the ESOL Performance Standards online at http://www.fldoe.org/aala/perstand.asp.)

Below we list some commonly asked questions concerning ESOL Endorsement enrollment and courses. This page also includes ESOL Endorsement course descriptions with the relevant Performance Standards. The course descriptions also detail the prerequisites and course delivery schedule.

How do I apply for admission to take ESOL Endorsement courses?
You do not need to apply for admission: our ESOL Endorsement courses are open.

More specifically, we do not require Endorsement students to take the GRE nor to apply for official admission into the MA program. Our open enrollment policy applies to inservice and preservice educators, as well as to those interested in exploring the field. Students may enroll in these courses under "non-degree-seeking" status.

Information is available on the web concerning non-degree-seeking enrollment. To learn about university policies and download the necessary forms, please go to http://www.usf.edu/admissions/non-degree-seeking.asp.

What do I need for ESOL Endorsement?
The required elements of State of Florida ESOL Endorsement are:
  1. teacher certification in another subject area, and
  2. completing ESOL coursework of
    • either 15 graduate credit hours, or
    • 300 in-service credit hours

Can any student take any class any semester?
Not exactly. Yes, some Endorsement classes are taught every semester. However, we restrict ourselves to delivering courses only at night for the convenience of our students. This means that we cannot offer every course every semester.

As well, some courses are open to students with no background (TSL 5700, TSL 5371, and TSL 5525). These courses are the pre-requisites for the more advanced courses (TSL 5372, TSL 5471). For information about specific courses, read the course descriptions below. These list key information, to help in your planning.

What if a student begins as non-degree-seeking, then later decides to earn a Master's?
Such students need to make this decision in a timely manner. Students who begin as non-degree-seeking or Endorsement students should realize that they may transfer in only 9 credit hours taken while non-degree-seeking. Thus, the change of status needs to take place earlier rather than later, so credits accrue towards graduation requirements.

These students will also need to go through the proper channels and meet the admissions criteria. Endorsement students who wish to pursue our Master's degree or State of Florida ESOL Certification will need to satisfy all those admissions requirements. Please refer to the hyperlinked programs for further information.
