Beta Phi Mu International Honor Society
at University of South Florida
“… to recognize and encourage scholastic achievement among library and information science students.”
Beta Phi Mu International Honor Society was founded in 1948 by a group of leading librarians and library educators to recognize and encourage scholastic achievement among library and information science students. The motto, Aliis inserviendo consumer, meaning “Consumed in the service of others” was selected by the founders based on the concept of dedication of librarians and other information professionals to the service of others.
The Beta Phi Chapter was established at the University of South Florida in May, 1980. Since then more than 400 members have been initiated into the local chapter. Members are spread throughout the U.S. with the majority of the members in the South and Southeast and they represent leaders and scholars in libraries and other information agencies of all types.
Eligibility for membership in Beta Phi Mu is by invitation of the faculty. Invitations are presented annually and only after the awarding of the American Library Association-accredited Master’s degree. Criteria for selection are based upon academic achievement, potential for leadership in the profession, and dedication to service. |
