Professor honored with Distinguished Alumnus Award[03.10.2011]
TAMPA, Fla. -- Christos Tsokos, distinguished university professor of mathematics and statistics at the University of South Florida, was recently granted the University of Connecticut Distinguished Alumnus Award.
Tsokos said the education he received from the university changed his life forever.
“I deeply value the education I received, especially in changing a football-oriented student into the richness of academic thinking,” he said. “In athletics I learned to handle victories and defeats with dignity, humility and grace. They bestowed in me the initial educational entities with diverse background to embrace intellectual inquiry and to assist in understanding the complex interdisciplinary problems that our global society is facing.”
The State of Connecticut House of Representatives said in an official citation that Tsokos has “touched the lives of many throughout [his] professional career.” The Assembly said they celebrated Tsokos as the “best in our academic world.”
In 2009, Tsokos was elected as President of the International Federation of Nonlinear Analysts and has numerous academic accomplishments.
The Distinguished Alumnus Award notes his research publications in more than 285 research journals, as well as his founding position in the USF Urban Scholars Outreach Program. The program offers free educational support to students in urban communities by helping them develop their math, reading and writing skills.
A native of Greece, Tsokos came to America in his teens and now serves as the founding president of the American Foundation of Greek Language and Culture.
