Annual language workshop begins Friday[03.11.2011]
TAMPA, Fla. -- People who love language to the point of wanting to know the most detailed aspect of how human beings put their thoughts into words are gathering at the University of South Florida for the Second Annual USF/Tampa Workshop on Syntax, Semantics and Phonology on March 11-12, 2011.
Languages from Malagasy to Polish to Brazilian Portuguese and the Spanish spoken by Japanese Colombians will get intense scrutiny. And those who want to know more about infixed plurals in Jebbali, a south Arabian language, or interrogative verbs in Amis, an Austronesian language in Taiwan will find scholars with whom to share their interest.
The keynote address will be delivered by Eric Potsdam from the University of Florida’s linguistics department on the topic, “A Direct Analysis of Malagasy Comparatives.”
“This is another great opportunity for USF and linguists from around the world working on a variety of languages to share their research and ideas,” said Margit Grieb, USF associate professor of world languages. “After a successful first meeting last year our workshop is growing and becoming more and more recognized in the linguistic universe.”
The main event is open to the public and free of charge. It will be held in the Grace Allen Room, fourth floor in the USF Library. The conference is sponsored, in part, by the Humanities Institute, the Department of World Languages and the College of Arts and Sciences.
