Forensic Science Symposium to present new research findings
[04.05.2011]

TAMPA, Fla. -- The University of South Florida Department of Anthropology and the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s Office will be hosting the upcoming Forensic Sciences Symposium: Research and Collaboration in Hillsborough County. This event will take place on Wednesday, April 6, from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s Office at 11025 N. 46th St.

The symposium is divided into three categories: investigations of unsolved cases and unidentified remains, which will discuss the solvability of cold cases as well as Tampa Bay’s cold case project; forensic anthropology, such as decomposition patterns in human remains and age estimation of molars; and toxicology to share findings of analysis of various drugs and chemicals.

This year USF was able to bring in a post-doctoral student from Hungary who needed advanced training to become qualified as an expert witness in the Hungarian Courts. She will be discussing World War II mass graves from Northeast Hungary at the symposium. There will be a time for questions afterward.

This project was started last year by USF graduate students who had taken an advanced lab methods class where they had the opportunity to study weekly at the medical examiner’s office. Presenter Erin Kimmerle, assistant professor of anthropology, is engaged with her undergraduate and graduate students at USF. In February, she and her graduate students attended the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS) annual conference in Chicago to present their research stemming from this collaboration.

Kimmerle also is involved with the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s Office and local law enforcement, including the Hillsborough County Sherriff’s Office and the Tampa Police Department.
