Lecture to discuss politics, racism and the USDA

TAMPA, Fla. -- The University of South Florida Department of Communication will host the Second Annual Distinguished Alumni Lecture featuring Emmett Winn, Ph.D. at 3:15 p.m. on Oct. 28, 2011 in CIS 3020. Winn will discuss how politics and filmmaking converged in the early 20th century to promote a view of racism in the United States.

The lecture Winn will be presenting is titled “The Communication of Racist Ideologies in USDA Documentaries.” The lecture will highlight Winn’s soon to be released book “Documenting Racism: African Americans in U.S. Department of Agricultural Films.” Winn’s research shows how African-Americans were represented in early films about the USDA and American farm life.

Winn has written a number of other books, including “The American Dream and Contemporary Hollywood Cinema” and “Transmitting the Past: Historical and Cultural Perspectives on Broadcasting,” as well as publishing many other articles and journals.

Winn is an associate professor of communication and vice provost at Auburn University.
