USF assistant professor receives R&D 100 Award

TAMPA, Fla. -- University of South Florida’s Sameer Varma, an assistant professor in the Department of Cell Biology, Microbiology and Molecular Biology, was recognized by R&D Magazine’s top 100 inventions of the year his work developing a water desalinization membrane.

The R&D 100 Awards recognizes the top technology products of the year, including new testing equipment, chemistry breakthroughs, biomedical products and consumer products.

Varma’s invention is a water desalination membrane that is 10 times more efficient than previous designs. It is based off computer simulations and lessons learned from Varma’s post-doctoral work focused on the functioning of ion channels.

The membranes are used to remove impurities from water and rejects salt and larger components to create drinking water. It will lead to more efficient water purification and the desalinization of plants to provide safer water around the world.

Varma and his team were recognized at the R&D 100 Awards Banquet and Exhibition on Oct. 13 in Orlando, Fla.
