USF to show documentary about AIDS epidemic

TAMPA, Fla. -- The University of South Florida is hosting a screening of the documentary “We Were Here” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2011, in the Grace Allen Room in the USF Tampa Library. The film chronicles San Francisco’s response to the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s.

USF alumnus Ed Wolf, who is featured in the film, also will speak about his experiences and his ongoing HIV/AIDS educational efforts. Wolf graduated from USF in 1971 with a degree in English.

The film, produced and directed by David Weissman, has been featured in film festivals, including the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. It also has been short-listed for an Academy Award nomination.

The event is sponsored by the Committee on Issues of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, the GLBT and Allied Medical Student Association, the USF Center for HIV Education and Research, the USF Department of History and the USF Tampa Library’s LGBT Collections Initiative.

The event is free and open to the public.
