USF alumna launches blog dedicated to sports, fashion

TAMPA, Fla. -- The Super Bowl is right around the corner and as fans frantically make plans to host or attend different events, they may be wondering what to wear. Luckily, a University of South Florida alumna helps sports fans avoid fashion penalties through her blog, The Style Ref.

In December, Kathy Dorf, who graduated with a mass communications degree in 2008, launched The Style Ref. This blog is an especially helpful resource for all kinds of sports fans who are looking for creative and fashionable ways to show their team spirit. Dorf offers a unique twist to the blog as she combines fashion and sports in the most accessible ways.

“I knew that I wanted to blog for a while,” Dorf said. “Two of my favorite things are fashion and sports.”

Dorf’s blog suggests several different accessories that are perfect for sports events or game-day parties. In addition, Dorf’s blog caters to a co-ed audience as she incorporates humorous fashion do’s and don’ts.

“Women are an increasingly powerful group for the sports industry and slowly I think [companies] starting to realize that,” Dorf said.

She said the most convenient accessory that a woman could rock to a sporting event would be a wristlet rather than a purse.

“Women should be relaxed, look the part and not worry about looking high fashion,” Dorf said.

Dorf said her education at USF prepared her to begin a blog like this.

“I received great design training with USF,” Dorf said.

Dorf said her passion for fashion and sports also blossomed at USF.

“I felt the connection,” Dorf said. “When our football program took off, I took off with it. I love college football. Since I live so far away now, it’s my lifeline.”

For Dorf, the best part about being a USF Bull is being a graduate and seeing how far the university has come.

Dorf, the loyal USF Bull that she is, also shares what she would wear to a USF sporting event.

“I would probably wear a throwback jersey, shorts, comfortable sandals and USF sunglasses.”
