USF anthropology dissertation named Top 40 in 2011

TAMPA, Fla. – A dissertation by a University of South Florida alumna was chosen as one of the 40 best in 2011 by Anthropology Works. Cecilia Vindrola-Padros, Ph.D., graduated from USF in 2011 with her master’s degree and her doctorate in applied anthropology. By completing both degrees in four years, Vindrola-Padros set an all-time record in the Department of Anthropology at USF for the fastest completion.

Vindrola-Padros’ dissertation focused on research that she did in Argentina during several years, studying how the Argentine open medical care law shapes the lives and experiences of people who migrate to Argentina to seek medical treatment.

“The recognition of all of the work that went into the dissertation is great, and I hope that it draws people’s attention to the issues that are being discussed there,” Vindrola-Padros said. She also said that the recognition brought about motivating messages from her colleagues in the Department of Anthropology at USF.

Vindrola-Padros said she chose to study the medical care law in Argentina and how it affects migrants due to personal reasons. With her family being from Argentina, she said she was “always fascinated by the country’s history and culture.”
