CAS student receives inaugural doctoral research fellowship

Nicole Caesar, a Ph.D. student in the University of South Florida’s Department of Geography, is the recipient of the USF Graduate School’s inaugural Signature Research Doctoral Fellowship. She will receive $18,000 for two academic years and a $600 travel budget to aid her in the completion of her doctoral research, which focuses on the relationship between urban growth and depleting freshwater resources in the Southwest Florida region.

Caesar, a St. Lucia native, said she was inspired to study freshwater sustainability after meeting some of the great researchers in the geography department. She hopes to develop a sustainable freshwater management model for use throughout Tampa Bay and the surrounding areas.

“We need to find a balance between the amount of resources provided for us by nature, and the amount that people use on a daily basis,” Caesar said.

For the next two years Caesar will be investigating why Tampa Bay and other areas included in the Southwest Florida Water Region continue to have freshwater shortages despite the fact that water management districts were put in place in the 1970s to prevent water shortage due to drought or overpopulation.
