USF public relations team finalists in national competition
[05.22.2012]

TAMPA, Fla. -- A team of public relations students at the University of South Florida has been recognized with a Scholastic Achievement Award and will be competing in the final round of the ANGA Collegiate Energy Challenge in Washington, D.C., on Thursday to determine their final placing.

The students in the Advanced Public Relations course participated in the Challenge through EdVenture Partners, a company that builds industry-education partnerships by pairing student teams with clients to solve a business challenge. The ANGA Collegiate Energy Challenge involved a nationwide contest to create an integrated marketing campaign for America’s Natural Gas Alliance. With a $3,000 budget provided by ANGA, the 46 students in the class created an working agency that developed a campaign aimed at educating and informing their local campus and community on the benefits of natural gas as an energy source. Their outstanding efforts in achieving client objectives earned them one of three Scholastic Achievement Awards.

“This project is the culmination of everything public relations students have learned in previous courses,” said Kelli Burns, an associate professor in the School of Mass Communications, who teaches the Advanced Public Relations class. “They are applying their knowledge to address a real-world situation.”

The top three student agencies are travelling all-expenses-paid to Washington, D.C., to present their work in front of ANGA and EdVenture Partners representatives for final judging. The presentation team includes agency coordinator Colin Cook and department heads Stacia Finger, Laura Johnson, Damon Lord and Crystal Price. Burns will accompany the team. The top prize of the Scholastic Achievement Award is $5,000 for the winning school. The USF team is competing against Auburn University and The University of Texas at Arlington.
