Outstanding CAS faculty members recognized [01.23.2013]
TAMPA, Fla. -- The University of South Florida will honor 25 outstanding faculty members for their recent professional recognitions by many of the world’s top scholarly and research organizations with a dinner and formal award ceremony on Thursday, Jan. 24, beginning at 6 p.m. in Lifsey House on the USF campus.
Of the 25 honorees, 10 faculty members from the College of Arts and Sciences will be been recognized.
Their respective accomplishments have earned them commendations from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, American Association for the Advancement of Science, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Science Foundation and the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program.
“At the heart of any great university rests its faculty, talented and passionate scholars and teachers who devote their days and nights to seeking innovative solutions to pervasive problems, creating and transmitting new knowledge, and mentoring leaders for the next generation,” USF Provost Ralph Wilcox said.
“The University of South Florida is fortunate to serve as the academic home to an immensely gifted and diverse faculty which engages daily in groundbreaking research, scholarship and creative activity,” Wilcox said . “On this occasion, we proudly celebrate the achievements and contributions of those who have been recognized by the most prestigious of national and international academic and professional organizations -- strengthening our reputation as a top-tier research institution with global impact.”
Introduced by Senior Vice Provost Dr. Dwayne Smith, each honoree will receive a cherry wood and bronze plaque from USF President Judy Genshaft and Wilcox indicating their status as an outstanding faculty member.
The CAS faculty honorees include:
· Jay Hopler, associate professor in the Department of English, for receiving a Rome Fellowship in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
· Robert Tykot, professor in the Department of Anthropology, for his election as a fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
· Michael Zaworotko, professor in the Department of Chemistry, for his election as a fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
· Golfo Alexopoulos, associate professor in the Department of History, for receiving a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
· Heide Castañeda, assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology, for her designation as a Fulbright U.S. Scholar.
· Sarah Kruse, associate professor in the Department of Geology, for her designation as a Fulbright U.S. Scholar.
· Margarethe Kusenbach, associate professor in the Department of Sociology, for her designation as a Fulbright U.S. Scholar.
· Ella Schmidt, associate professor in the Department of Anthropology, for her designation as a Fulbright U.S. Scholar.
· Wei Zhu, associate professor in the Department of World Languages, for her designation as a Fulbright U.S. Scholar.
· Casey Miller, associate professor in the Department of Physics, for receiving a National Science Foundation CAREER Award.
In addition, Emanuel Donchin, Ph.D., Department of Psychology, will be recognized for his ascension to the rank of Distinguished University Professor, the highest faculty distinction at USF, reserved for senior faculty members who have distinguished themselves among their peers both within and outside the university.
