Paola Gianturco to speak at USF Grandmother Power[03.06.2013]
TAMPA, Fla. -- The University of South Florida’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies in conjunction with the Women’s Status Committee will welcome acclaimed photojournalist and activist Paola Gianturco to lecture on her fifth book: “Grandmother Power: A Global Phenomenon.” The event will be at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 7 at the Gibbons Alumni Center.
“Grandmother Power” documents a new, unheralded international women’s movement and the increasingly important bond that grandmothers are striving to build with their grandchildren.
“Everywhere I went when I was documenting the work of activist grandmothers in 15 countries, I saw grandmothers reveling in their grandchildren’s good company,” said Gianturco.
The book features 120 activist grandmothers in 15 countries on five continents who are fighting courageously and effectively against poverty, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation and human rights abuse to create a better world for grandchildren everywhere.
Gianturco has appeared on the “Oprah Winfrey Show,” CNN, NPR and “Voice of America” programs. Her photos have been published in national magazines and newspapers and the United Nations - New York, UNESCO - Paris and museums worldwide have exhibited her work.
Gianturco co-developed and taught Executive Institutes on Women and Leadership at Stanford University, and served on the Board of the Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID). She was a principal in the first women-owned advertising agency in the United States and is a current member of International Women’s Forum.
