School of Information to hold lecture on library careers
[03.28.2013]

TAMPA, Fla. -- The University of South Florida School of Information will host a lecture entitled “Practical Pathways in Library Land: Making the Transition from the Classroom to Careers in Cultural Heritage Institutions” at 4 p.m. on April 12, 2013 in the Special Collections and University Archives Reading Room at USF St. Petersburg.

Speakers will include Special Collections Librarian Jim Schnur from USF St. Pete and graduate student Katie Kerns from USF Tampa.

Schnur, a 1996 USF graduate, will lead a conversation that addresses themes common in academic, public and special libraries. He also will offer a tour of the reading room and closed stack areas of Special Collections and University Archives at the Poynter Library, and offer a brief discussion of the USFSP Digital Archive.

Kerns, a School of Information student and Student Organizations of Library and Information Science archivist, will describe some of the applied and practical learning from her spring 2013 fieldwork experience at the Poynter Library. She will discuss the ways in which internships and field experiences offer students opportunities to see the ways that various facets of library operations intersect.

Students are invited to take a 20-minute walking tour of the USF St. Petersburg campus immediately following the lecture. During the tour Schnur will discuss how the archives have preserved an awareness of our history.
