USF student selected as regional finalist for White House fellowship

TAMPA, Fla. – University of South Florida student Terry-René Brown was selected as a regional finalist in the White House Fellows Program for leadership and public service.

Brown is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Integrative Biology, and is also a graduate teaching assistant for Biology II lab. She also is involved in climate change research for her dissertation (elevated CO2 effects on freshwater algae). Before her work at USF, she was the Environmental Lands Program Manager for Pasco County, as well as the founding board member of the Tampa Bay Conservancy.

The application process for the White House Fellows Program consisted of several essays, letters of recommendations, and endless forms to fill out. Brown was one of 100 selected from more than 1,000 applicants to move on to the regional interviews.

The regional interviews will take place in Miami, April 16-17. She will be notified in May if she made it to the national interview round. If selected, Brown will accompany about 30 other candidates to move on to the national interviews in Washington, D.C. in June.

If selected for the fellowship, Brown will get the opportunity to spend a year working as a full-time, paid fellow to senior White House staff, cabinet secretaries, and other top-ranking government officials.

She also would participate in an education program involving roundtable discussions with leaders from private and public sectors, as well as trips to study U.S. policy both domestically and internationally.

The White House Fellows program is one of America's most prestigious programs for leadership and public service in government. It offers young men and women experience at the highest levels of the federal government.

“I am excited to have been selected for a regional interview,” Brown said. “I really appreciate the support from USF.”
