CAS student receives finalist status for Presidential Management Fellowship

TAMPA, Fla. -- Lizette Howard of the University of South Florida has been selected as a Presidential Management Fellowship Finalist. Sponsored by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, the PMF Program recruits outstanding graduate students for leadership and development in federal government. It provides leadership training, job rotations and the potential for accelerated promotions. Fellows in the program receive full Federal employee salary and benefits.

Howard is a 2013 Ph.D. graduate of the USF Department of Government and International Affairs, and she is also a McKnight Doctoral Fellow. Her dissertation topic focuses on European Union Institutions, Democratic Discourse and the Color Revolutions. As part of the program, Howard will serve a two-year appointment to develop her leadership skills after being matched with a federal agency.

Howard is one of 663 finalists, selected from a long multi-stage assessment process, to attend a job fair where she will be matched with an agency. In 2012, the PMF Program received approximately 12,120 applicants for the 2013 application cycle. She is interested in working with a variety of federal agencies in the international relations and security sectors, including the Departments of Defense, Homeland Security, Justice and State. PMF is an ideal fit for her career trajectory, as she is interested in furthering her past experience in the Departments of Defense and State.

The Office of National Scholarships identifies, recruits and mentors high achieving students to apply for national merit scholarships across all disciplines. The scholarships and fellowships are for creative, motivated and academically strong students who are leaders in and out of the classroom.

Bearing the Presidential moniker, the PMF Program is a flagship leadership development program at the entry level for advanced degree candidates. It was created more than three decades ago by Executive Order and has gone through many changes over the years. The program attracts and selects the best candidates possible, but is really designed with a more narrow focus -- developing a cadre of potential government leaders. The PMF Program inculcates a lasting bond as well as a spirit of public service, ultimately encouraging and leading to a career in the government.
