New USF student organization offers thesis, volunteer opportunities

TAMPA, Fla. – Beginning this fall, University of South Florida students will have the opportunity to join a new student organization, the USF Botanical Gardens Club. This organization will offer students the opportunity to develop an honors thesis or volunteer with the Botanical Gardens.

The organization’s first meeting will be at noon on Friday, Sept. 3, 2010 at the USF Botanical Gardens.

Students from all disciplines are welcome to pursue an honors thesis in the areas of Florida wildlife, Florida plants, biogeography, conservation, Florida flora and fauna, ecosystems of Florida, funding for non-profits or sustainability. For more information about developing an honors thesis project, please contact Laurie Walker at lwalker@usf.edu.

In addition, the USF Botanical Gardens Club provides ways for students to volunteer at the gardens. The next volunteer orientation is at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010. Volunteer orientations take place on the fourth Saturday of each month.

For those students who are interested in learning more about the Botanical Gardens, the USF Botanical Gardens Club is hosting an open house on Aug. 26 and Aug. 27. The Botanical Gardens staff will give tours of the gardens and serve refreshments. Students will have an opportunity to sign up for a vegetable plot; However, spots are limited.
