English professor’s latest book released
[12.06.2013]

TAMPA, Fla. -- A University of South Florida English professor’s new book examines the writings of Lady Anne Bacon Drury (1572-1624), who was the granddaughter and niece of two of England's Lord Keepers of the Great Seal, Sir Nicholas Bacon and Sir Francis Bacon.

This fall, Ashgate Publishing released Assistant Professor Heather Meakin’s new book “The Painted Closet of Lady Anne Bacon Drury.”

Meakin was awarded the Paul Mellon Centre Publication and Author Grant for the research and publication of the book.

The 150,000-word work examines the “prayer closet”--or study--of Lady Anne Bacon Drury one of British metaphysical poet John Donne’s wealthy patronesses.

For the first time in 400 years, Meakin’s interdisciplinary book provides the biographical, intellectual and aesthetic contexts for the closet, and a close reading of each of its panels.

In addition to the release of her new work, Meakin was selected as the Humanities Institute’s “Homegrown Humanities” Scholar for the month of December.
