Professor chosen for research program in South Africa

TAMPA, Fla. -- A professor at the University of South Florida Department of Integrative Biology was appointed as a research fellow at Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study in South Africa.

Gordon Fox, Ph.D., will participate in a month-long fellowship in July and August 2014. He will be working with Jessica Gurevitch, Ph.D., from Stony Brook University. The subject of their research in South Africa will be “Developing a Theory of Landscape Demography."

“We will develop models that allow us to examine population spread more realistically, where different local conditions cause each local groups to grow and spread at very different rates,” Fox said, “We will also develop models that specifically focus on the growth and spread of invasive species in two important genera in fynbos--acacia and pines--including the way that wildfires affect their spread.”

In his work in the Department of Integrative Biology, Fox’s research specialties are population dynamics and ecology, specifically, evolution and genetics of plant life histories. Fox’s research has both field-based and theoretical components.
