Geosciences professor receives grant to study inlet management crucial to coastal living
[04.21.2014]

TAMPA, Fla. -– University of South Florida’s School of Geosciences Ping Wang was awarded a $198,769 grant by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to study inlet management in Pinellas County.

His research will focus on John’s Pass and Blind Pass, and will investigate the interactions between barrier-islands and a dual inlet system using field measurements and numerical modeling.

Sustainable coastal living depends on these interactions, and maintaining safe navigation through the tidal inlets interferes with beach processes, causing beach erosion.

Wang’s goal is to develop a scientifically sound management plan for the two inlets that balance the needs for safe navigation and healthy beach environments along the adjacent barrier islands.
