Humanities Institute accepting entries for 3rd annual poetry contest[02.06.2015]
TAMPA, Fla. -- The Humanities Institute at the University of South Florida is collecting entries for the third annual poetry competition as part of National Poetry Month 2015.
National Poetry Month, held in the month of April, is a nationwide initiative started by the Academy of American Poets in 1996. Titled NPM@USF by the USF Humanities Institute, the beauty and power of poetry will be celebrated through events including readings, workshops and festivals. This is the largest month-long poetry series in Florida.
The theme of this year’s NPM@USF is “Everyday Life.” The theme may be interpreted broadly to give the poets the opportunity to give new meanings to the often overlooked routines of our daily lives.
Entrants may only submit one poem of no more than 25 lines. These poems must be postmarked or emailed by Feb. 20, 2015.
The contest is divided into two categories: High School Poets and USF Poets. First, second and third place in each category will be awarded at a special event featuring distinguished poet Naomi Shihab Nye. Nye will be in residence at USF during the first week of April.
Throughout the month of April, additional finalists’ poems will also be featured on the NPM@USF website.
