CAS student, alumni to be featured speakers at TEDxUSF[03.20.2015]
TAMPA, Fla. -- The College of Arts and Sciences will have three speakers at the popular TEDxUSF event on March 28 at the USF School of Music Barness Recital Hall. The theme of this year’s TEDxUSF is “A World Beyond Ourselves.”
Jonathon Burroughs, a second-year undergraduate majoring in health sciences, will present “Learning How to Backflip.” Burroughs spent the spring 2014 semester abroad, where he took classes, sailed and scuba dived. Here is where he learned to appreciate simplicity and modesty while living on a sailboat. He is an active member in the Honors College, Education Abroad and men’s ultimate Frisbee.
Carissa Caricato, an alumna of the Zimmerman School of Advertising and Mass Communications, will present “Dancing for Freedom: Your Dark Story Has a Purpose.” Caricato is the founder of Hoola for Happiness, an international dance, non-governmental organization, which has taken her all over the world spreading joy through hoops. She is passionate about giving a voice to women oppressed by violence and bring joy to dark places.
Gloria Munoz, an alumna of the creative writing master’s program, along with her artistic USF alumni team will present “SEE. HEAR. FEEL. Art for a Cause.” Munoz and her team consisting of Mark Feinman, Alejandro Arenas and John O’Leary, Ph.D., work on collaborative projects for a cause. Their project, “SEE. HEAR. FEEL.”, is a multi-sensory arts experience focusing on Alzheimer’s disease. The project will tour galleries, clinics and conventions around the U.S. with the support from the USF Health Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute.
TEDxUSF is a local, self-organized event created by TED to share TED-like talks devoted to spreading ideas in short, powerful talks featuring live speakers and videos. These inspiring and motivating talks of TEDxUSF that are shared from speakers in the community are created to spark conversation, action and connections in a small group.
TEDxUSF will be streamed live at http://usf.edu/tedx. Viewers also can join the conversation during the event on Twitter using the hashtag #tedxusf.
