USF Phi Beta Kappa Faculty Lecture Series to feature prominent Civil War historian

TAMPA, Fla.--Famed historian and author Eric Foner, Ph.D., will be speaking at 6:30 p.m., on Sept. 23 at the USF Marshall Student Center in the Oval Theater as part of the USF Phi Beta Kappa Faculty Lecture Series.

His lecture, "The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln, Slavery and the Rights of Black Americans," will revolve around his latest publication "Our Lincoln: New Perspectives on Lincoln and His World."

Foner, who also serves as a history professor at Columbia University, is only the second person to serve as president of three major historian organizations: the Organization of American Historians, American Historical Association, and Society of American Historians.

His publications have been printed in six languages and include: "Free Soil, Free Labor, Free Men: The Ideology of the Republican Party Before the Civil War" and "Reconstruction: America's Unfinished Revolution, 1863-1877."

While serving as a historian and professor nationally and internationally, Foner was also a co-curator for prize-winning exhibitions.

His awards include: Presidential Award for Outstanding Teaching from Columbia University, Scholar of the Year by the New York Council for the Humanities in 1995 and the Los Angeles Times Book Award.

The USF Phi Beta Kappa Faculty Lecture Series is co-sponsored by the USF Phi Beta Kappa Faculty Alumni, USF College of Arts and Sciences, USF Office of the Provost and the Mayor of Tampa. The aim of the series is to bring leading public intellectuals to USF and to Tampa to interact with students, faculty, staff and members of our community.

The event is free and open to the public.
