CAS student receives study abroad scholarship [03.18.2015]
TAMPA, Fla. -- Hollyn Hartlep, a senior majoring in international studies and Spanish at the University of South Florida College of Arts and Sciences was awarded the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) to study intermediate level Arabic in Madaba, Jordan for eight weeks this summer. The Critical Language Scholarship award is fully funded by the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The award also provides an orientation in Washington, D.C. and language courses abroad during the summer of 2015.
Hartlep received the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship in 2012 a study abroad program in Peru, in which she served as the USF Nourish International Project Leader. She has taught English abroad in Peru and Panama and has interned for the Consulate of Peru in Tampa. Hartlep is the president and founder of USF’s Arabic Language Organization and currently volunteers for the Harvest Community Hope Center, where she assists and instructs children on the maintenance of an organic garden. She is fluent in Spanish, and conversational in Arabic and Portuguese.
Through the CLS program, Hartley hopes to profoundly deepen her Arabic language skills, alongside her understanding of Arab culture. After graduating from USF in May, she plans to enter a graduate program in public health, with the long-term goal of working with refugees internationally as part of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, or domestically, as part of the Office of Refugee Resettlement for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Immersing herself in the Arabic language and culture will better prepare her to communicate with, and understand people who she hopes to serve in the future.
The Office of National Scholarships identifies, recruits and mentors high achieving students to apply for national merit scholarships across all disciplines. The scholarships and fellowships are for creative, motivated and academically strong students who are leaders in and out of the classroom.
The Critical Language Scholarship offers fully-funded group-based intensive language instruction and summer language institutes for U.S. university undergraduate and graduate students to study 13 critical foreign languages for the summer term in locations where the language is natively spoken. The selection process is administered by the American Councils for International Education and The Ohio State University/Ohio University with awards approved by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Cultural Affairs.
