Department of English begins mentorship program

TAMPA, Fla. -- Friday, Sept. 11, 2015 marked the beginning of the new English Mentorship Program, developed by the English Graduate Student Association (EGSA) to foster a relationship between fledgling English majors and graduate students. EGSA members Heather Fox and Meg Mandell created the mentorship program, which pairs up undergraduates with graduate mentors who can provide a support system, advice and guidance while students earn their degree.

The program, organized by Mandell and Micah Chapman includes social events to help undergraduates get acclimated, and the first meeting involved a meet-and-greet with fun activities such as “Getting to Know You” Bingo, in addition to an overall introduction to the program. The program will involve face-to-face meetings between mentors and mentees, presentations and workshops intended to specifically address English majors. These sessions will include information about post-graduation employment, helpful tips about addressing the challenges that the major may entail and the numerous benefits an education in English can offer. While the program is currently hosted on Canvas for announcements and sharing purpose, Chapman said “it is not an extra course for students, and it is a not an extra workload. It is a resource.”

The program aims to allow undergraduate students to learn from the experiences of their graduate mentors so they have a safe place to learn, grow and ask questions as they make their way through their courses. It also allows for graduates to gain valuable knowledge through sharing experience and communicating with their mentees.
