Faculty, graduate students present at national conferences[07.06.2016]
TAMPA, Fla. -- The Association of Teachers of Technical Writing and the Conference on College Composition and Communication were recently held in Houston on April 6-9. The USF rhetoric and composition program had 10 graduate students and faculty members present at these conferences.
Doctoral student Lauren Cagle received an ATTW research award and presented her research on “Shaping Climate Citizenship: The Problem of Thin Citizenship for Climate Change Communication and Policy.” At CCCC, Cagle also presented her project, “The Critical Accessibility Framework: Students’ Assessment of Accessibility in Technical Communication.”
At ATTW, doctoral student Josh Rea and M.A. student Katie Walkup presented “Journaling and Bibliotherapy: Methodology, Usability and Pedagogy.” M.A. student Samantha Cosgrove participated in a poster session at ATTW with her project “Drop, Cover and Hold On: Analyzing FEMA’s Risk Communication through Visual.”
At CCCC, Joe Moxley, Ph.D. led a workshop on Responsible Action: International Higher Education Writing Research Exchange. Moxley’s presentation was titled “Politeness, Criticism and Praise in Student Peer Reviews, a Cross-Cultural Analysis.”
Erin Trauth, Ph.D. presented “Labeling, Naming and Visualizing Health and Illness: How Food Labels, FDA Reports and Ebola Charts Can Help Teach Rhetorical Analysis.” Trauth also was presented with the Outstanding Dissertation Award in Technical Communication.
Doctoral students Stephanie Phillips, Ryan Blank and Tiffany Wilgar presented on Environmental and Scientific Rhetoric in Action. Stephanie presented “GMOsquitoes: Controversy over the Release of Genetically Modified Mosquitoes in the Florida Keys.” Ryan’s presentation was titled “Rhetoric as Taking Action: The Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge and the Challenges of Conservation,” and Tiffany’s presentation was titled “Seeing Stardust: Class, Culture and The Nevada Test Site.” Finally, Dr. Meredith Johnson presented “Lean Technical Communication: Toward Sustainable Program Administration” at CCCC.
