Communication professor wins distinguished award

TAMPA, Fla. -- Kenneth Cissna, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Communication, won the 2010 Distinguished Award for an Edited Scholarly Book from the Applied Communication Division of the National Communication Association NCA.

Cissna was co-editor of the winning book, "Routledge Handbook of Applied Communication Research," with Lawrence Frey, Ph.D. of the University of Colorado at Boulder.

"I'm delighted," Cissna said. "Larry and I worked a long time on that handbook, and having it win this award is gratifying."

The book provides a state-of-the-art review of communication scholarship that addresses real-world concerns, issues and problems, and provides agendas for future applied communication research.

The NCA is the largest organization in the world devoted to communication scholarship and education. Its mission is to advance communication as the discipline that studies all forms, modes, media and consequences of communication through humanistic, social scientific and aesthetic inquiry. A non-profit organization, NCA has more than 8,000 educators, practitioners and students who work and reside in every state and more than 20 countries, according to its website.
