Annual Tropical Plant Fair set for July 10-11[07.02.2010]TAMPA, Fla. – Did you lose your tropical plants in last winter’s harsh weather? Those delicate orchids and ginger plants, fragrant plumeria, or lush green ferns?
Ready to recreate your backyard tropical paradise?
Then the USF Botanical Garden’s upcoming Tropical Plant Fair on July 10-11 is the perfect opportunity to replenish, to learn which tropicals are hardiest, and how to help them thrive.
“This is Florida and we love our tropical plants. It’s one of the reasons we like living here,” said Kim Hutton, special events coordinator for the Botanical Gardens. “However, people may be a bit gun shy about planting tropicals after losing them in last winter’s harsh weather, and they want ones that won’t die so easily. This is the perfect opportunity to get some advice. Plus, now is the best time of year to get tropical plants in the ground during the rainy season.”
This is the twelfth year the USF Botanical Gardens is hosting a fair dedicated to tropical plants, and Hutton says it’s always one of the gardens’ largest plant fairs featuring the most vendors. Thirty-five vendors will be offering hundreds of blooming and exotic plants loaded with color to enhance home gardens, including gingers, orchids, plumerias, banana plants and carnivorous plants. The fair is also the ideal time to enjoy the tropical plants in bloom throughout the gardens.
In addition to plant sales, the fair will feature a workshop on ferns at noon on Saturday, July 10. “You just can’t beat ferns for creating that tropical look,” said Hutton. “They thrive in our moist climate.”
The International Rare Fruit Council will be on hand both days offering advice on growing fruit trees and will host a workshop on fruit tree basics at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
And just for fun – and free admission – on Sunday, July 11, attendees are encouraged to bring a decorated green pepper to enter into the Pepper Beauty Contest.
The Tropical Plant Fair takes place on July 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on July 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is $5. Garden members and children under 12 years of age are admitted free. Parking is free.
