USF Botanical Garden Plant Shop to host Gesneriad Celebration

TAMPA, Fla. -- University of South Florida Botanical Gardens Plant Shop will host the special one-day Gesneriad Celebration Saturday, Sept.14 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Gesneriads are the family of plants that include African violets and many more colorful little plants. Members of the Tampa Bay Gesneriad Society will be on hand both days to answer questions. The Gesneriad Society will have a display set up with spectacular specimens. The Plant Shop will feature different types of Episcias, Achimenes, Gloxinias, African violets and many more for sale. There will be a lecture at 11 a.m. titled “What is a Gesneriad and How to grow them.”

The USF Botanical Garden is a non-profit, member- sponsored, educational facility. The Garden is open to the public seven days a week (except major holidays). The Garden is located on the southwest corner of the Tampa campus, at Pine and Alumni drives, off of Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, just one block north of Fowler Avenue.

The mission of the Garden is to foster appreciation, understanding and stewardship of our natural and cultural botanical heritage through living plants, collections, displays, education and research.
