USF researcher published in July for research that shows birds have cognitive ability

TAMPA, Fla. – University of South Florida research shows birds can use tools, solve problems and plan for the future.

Toru Shimizu, chair of the Department of Psychology, is a co-author of two papers published in the July issue of Science. Shimizu is a noted expert in animal cognition.

The article, “Distinct neutral circuits underlie assessment of a diversity of natural dangers by American crows” was first published online in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B in July 3, 2013.

Shimizu’s second article, “Large-scale network organization in the avian forebrain: a connectivity matric and theoretical analysis,” was published in the Frontiers in Computational Neuroscience on July 4, 2013.

This research was done, “…using graph theory to show that the pigeon telencephalon is organized alone similar lines to that of a mammal.” It ultimately concluded that the “…connectivity of the avian brain conforms to the same organizational principles as the mammalian brain.”
