USF to host “The American Jewish Story through Cinema” lecture[03.13.2015]
TAMPA, Fla. -- The University of South Florida College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Religious Studies will present the eighth June Baumgardner Gelbart Lecture in Jewish Studies. “The American Jewish Story through Cinema” will be presented by Eric A. Goldman, an adjunct professor of cinema at Yeshiva University and film reviewer for New Jersey's The Jewish Standard. The lecture will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 26, 2015, at Traditions Hall within the Gibbons Alumni Center on the USF Tampa campus.
Goldman will discuss the evolving situation of the American Jew through the lens of cinema. In an industry strongly influenced by Jewish filmmakers, the evolving nature of the American Jewish condition has had a considerable impact on American cinema and, in particular, on how Jews are reflected on the screen.
As American Jewish screenwriters, directors and producers have become increasingly comfortable with their heritage, an unprecedented number of movies spotlight Jewish protagonists, experiences and challenges. Attendees will have the opportunity to watch and analyze film clips and learn how cinema can give us a better understanding of the social, political and cultural realities of Jewish life in America.
This lecture is made possible by a generous grant from the June Baumgardner Gelbart Foundation. A Tampa Bay area philanthropist and patron of the arts, Gelbart was active in the local Jewish community and committed to programs serving Jewish youth. The Foundation continues June Baumgarner Gelbart’s philanthropic legacy.
The lecture will be followed by a question and answer session and a light reception. This presentation is free and open to the general public. Enter the main entrance to USF on Fowler Avenue, take Leroy Collins Boulevard and turn right at the first traffic light onto Alumni Drive. The Alumni Center is a red brick building on the right.
